Where to Kep
Trail Heads
You can do the Kep Track in either direction (east - west, west - east). Trail heads are located at
Mundaring Weir – outside Mundaring Weir Hall opposite Mundaring Weir Hotel, Weir Village Rd, Mundaring Weir.
Northam – The northern side of Poole Street Bridge on the west side of the town, just off Mitchell Avenue.
Parking areas at all the towns along the way and at road crossings (see map) mean you can tailor your outing according to your needs and the time available.
Rail Trail Gradient
In general Kep Track has a gentle gradient because it largely follows the route of former railway lines.
Between Mundaring Weir and the township of Mundaring you follow the weir spurline. From Mundaring Kep Track follows the original route of the Eastern Railway over the Darling Range as far as Clackline. From Clackline to Northam Kep Track follows Eadine Rd before linking up with the access road for the pipeline.
Look for the steel poles
Distinctive Kep Track markers are made from steel tubes in keeping with the pipeline theme. They have cut-out directional arrows and reflective collars. Follow these in conjunction with the map to avoid getting lost and trespassing on private property.
Information signs provide insights into some of the hidden stories along the Kep Track. Stop and read about the area or a feature you are passing. They usually include a panel of information and a photograph.
Look for the wooden poles
Railway sleepers are used to alert you to hazards such as upcoming road crossings and provide useful information such as street names and distances to the next town.
These signs are in keeping with the area’s long history of timber-cutting and the old railway formation.
Surface warnings
Much of Kep Track’s surface is compacted gravel. In some places you will encounter “pea gravel”. Walkers and cyclists should take care on this loose surface. Off-road tyres are a must.
Cyclists should carry spare tubes in case of encountering thorny weeds.
